Water and sanitation: what perspectives facing energy challenges and climate change 15 March 2010 - 18 March 2010
Kampala, Uganda http://www.irc.nl/page/49023
There is increasing pressure on construction site managers to reduce the off-site impacts of stormwater runoff on streams, lakes, and estuaries adjacent to their projects. Traditional erosion and sediment control measures, even when properly installed and maintained, will often release highly turbid water to the environment. Increasing scrutiny and regulation of these discharges is driving developers to seek cost-effective practices to address the turbidity that standard sediment traps and basins cannot capture. Polymer systems developed in or adapted from water treatment, mining, and agricultural applications have been adapted for use on construction sites and can bring runoff turbidity to acceptable levels, often two orders of magnitude lower. This workshop will provide participants with the background and knowledge to implement a wide range of methods to reduce turbidity in construction site stormwater. The workshop is designed to provide practical information on the use of polymers for professionals involved in designing and managing erosion, sediment, and turbidity control on construction sites. We are offering a Certificate of Completion for those interested in taking an exam at the end of the day. The Certificate of Completion will provide evidence that you have completed the workshop and understand the basic concepts of turbidity control systems. The Certificate of Completion is not a substitute for professional licenses or registrations. Those who choose not to take the exam will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming the number of instructional hours attended. 16 March 2010 - 01 January 1800

Modern wastewater treatment plants are able to produce an effluent that has a negligible impact on the receiving watercourse. The efficacy of such treatment is evidenced by the continuous improvement in the quality of our rivers which the Environment Agency acknowledges as being the best on record. However achieving this level of improvement itself generates pollution, principally as a result of its high energy usage and release of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxides. The impact of GHG’s on our climate is widely recognised and accepted and the consequences of ignoring these impacts have been clearly outlined in the Stern Report. Indeed many commentators now consider that climate change is the biggest global threat to public health of the 21st Century. There are many examples of costly enhancements to wastewater treatment that deliver questionable environmental benefits, inter alia: a spot compliance regime, effluent disinfection, odour control, nitrogen removal and sludge pasteurisation. If the water industry is to take seriously the threats of climate change, the challenge for both the regulators and the water companies is to balance the environmental costs and benefits of wastewater treatment in a manner that considers the wider environmental impacts and not solely the aquatic environment. It is the aim of this course therefore, to consider: What are the relative environmental impacts and benefits of our current treatment regime and which consented parameters deliver negligible measurable benefits? What is the scope for relaxing consents, where this can be shown to demonstrate negligible adverse impacts but large reductions in GHG emissions? What low-carbon treatment alternatives are available, but held back by the consenting regime? What limits on GHG emissions should water companies strive towards for its wastewater treatment activities? We are inviting speakers to contribute to this debate and if you wish to make a presentation please email a proposed title and 3 brief bullet points outlining your talk 25 March 2010 - 01 January 1800

All wastewater treatment plants will experience operating problems from time to time, and some plants a lot more than others. Very few activated sludge plants have been completely free from foaming and bulking problems at some time and other plants suffer these problems on a routine basis. In a similar way poor solids removal, inefficient BOD removal, odour problems, inhibition and toxicity can all occur on a seemingly random basis. Routine sampling and chemical analysis from is expensive, demanding and its interpretation is not always clear. By contrast microscopic examination of the microbial consortium in the treatment plant is simple, inexpensive and provides extensive information as to the likely causes of plant problems. The results can also be used to optimize the performance of the plant to ensure that effluent is as good as the plant is able to produce and that energy costs and sludge production are at a minimum. 13 April 2010 - 01 January 1800

The main objective of the conference is to jointly discuss recent aspects related to sustainable solutions for small water and wastewater systems (SWWS) within a framework of sharing experiences from the scientific, engineering, operation and governance points of view within an international scope. The definition of small was initially related to those treatment systems serving less than 2000 p.e. Nevertheless, in the last years that definition has been expanded to include industrial water and wastewater systems with loading rates similar to small urban systems. The main focus of the conference will be those explained in the proposed themes. Joint discussion of several of them will be highly welcome, especially those involving a sustainable point of view of the treatment in the area of technological applications for both developing and industrialised countries. 19 April 2010 - 22 April 2010

Modeling in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and hydrology, whether using digital tools or using scale models, has reached sufficient maturity to be in daily use by engineers for analysis and for communication. Increasingly complex cases can be handled thanks to ever more sophisticated tools and increasingly abundant computing power. However, quantifying uncertainty in the data and in the models for integration into decision-making processes remains a legitimate concern. With respect to these issues, a number of questions remain open: the calibration and accuracy of complex models, their relevance to case studies, and their prediction capability. 02 June 2010 - 04 June 2010

Amidst the global economic crisis, there is a need for efficient and cost effective solutions to provide safe drinking water at an economical price to the masses. Singapore International Water Week 2010, aptly themed Sustainable Cities: Clean and Affordable Water, the water week 2010 will focus on the need for efficiency in our water solutions to address water problems in the region amidst a constantly changing environment. More than half of the earth’s population already live in cities, and the trend towards urbanisation is accelerating. This is especially true for the emerging counties in the Asian region. As urbanisation continues to gain its momentum, there is an urgency to address the water shortage issues before the situation deteriorates further and hampers economic growth. 28 June 2010 - 02 July 2010

Few processes have received the attention or have advanced so much over the past decade as anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. This is unsurprising in the light of the potential of this process to generate renewable energy with its attendant renewable obligations certificate (ROC). This module will review the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic digestion that is essential for a full process understanding. It will examine improvements in the design and performance of anaerobic digestion and consider the wide range of new technologies that are available for pre-treating sludge and thus enhancing gas yields and increasing solids reduction. 29 June 2010 - 29 June 2010
This second more advanced course on anaerobic digestion assumes that delegates have a basic process understanding and considers more detailed design aspects and reviews the key design strategies and process models. It views the operation of an existing plant from the perspective of optimising methane production and volatile solids destruction, including the use of pre-treatment alternatives. It considers the importance of downstream processing (digestate dewatering and disposal, liquor treatment), the opportunities for nutrient recovery and the uses for the biogas produced. Process optimisation is thus viewed from the perspective of all of the flow streams and not simply biogas production. The main process operating problems are reviewed in detail and strategies for their alleviation and prevention and covered. 30 June 2010 - 30 June 2010
Original papers are invited on theory, measurement, analysis, modeling and practice for the following topics: Coastal Processes; Coastal, Shore and Estuarine Structures; Ports, Harbours and Waterways; Coastal Environment; Coastal Risks; Coastal Development. In September 1990 the Nature Conservancy Council organised an international conference on ‘The Conservation and Management of Rivers’. The conference was truly international, attracting 337 delegates from 29 countries. By September 2010 twenty years will have elapsed since the York conference. A huge amount has changed in the world since then – economically, politically, culturally, scientifically. This conference will look back over this period and assess the changes in river conservation – how the environment has changed, how the legislation and policies that drive conservation have changed, how organisations have changed, how techniques for practising river conservation have changed, and how public attitudes have changed. What predictions did we make in 1990? Which have been proved accurate and which have not? Where have we succeeded and where have we failed? The 2010 conference provides an opportunity both to share experience as we look back over the last 20 years, and to use the lessons of the past to look 20 years on into the future. 06 September 2010 - 09 September 2010

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been adopted by many Italian communities as a cost-effective mean of secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment, in order to meet more stringent standards and to lower operating costs. Some small systems have now been in existence for nearly 15 years, while wetland treatment systems for larger towns and small cities have become a more recent trend. Since 1999 CWs have been “officially” recognized as a treatment technology. 04 October 2010 - 07 October 2010

A sewer is not just a collector and transport system but also a chemical and biological reactor that must be considered as an integral part of the total urban wastewater system. Traditionally, hydraulics and pollutant transport phenomena of sewer systems have been the main consideration in their design and management. However, sewers deserve a much broader range of considerations to ensure that the overall wastewater system operates efficiently and effectively to maximise the benefits to triple bottom line factors of costs, environment and social aspects. This series of conferences brings together the support and expertise of both the International Water Association (IWA) and the International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR) under the Sewer Systems & Processes Working Group (www.sspwg.org) of The Joint Committee on Urban Drainage (JCUD). The JCUD was established in 1981 in recognition of the intrinsic inter-relationship between hydraulic aspects (main focus of IAHR) and water quality aspects (main focus of IWA) in the field of urban drainage. 07 November 2010 - 10 November 2010

Water and energy are two essential resources, the availability of which is already becoming critical in some societies. Both factors are infl uenced by climate change. Consequently, protective countermeasures (adaptation) as well as preventive measures against further climate change (mitigation) will be required to maintain durable and sustainable water and energy resources. In need of the scarce water resources, various energy-related water consumers (e.g. cooling water for power plants) have to compete with other water users, like agriculture, urban water consumers and industry. Also, the interaction between water and energy may have environmental impacts, for instance spatial effects of hydropower generation and surface water temperature increase due to cooling water discharges. Overexploitation by fast growing megacities and droughts caused by climate change may severely reduce the available natural water resources, requiring more and more energyintensive technologies for water extraction and drinking water production (e.g. desalination). Similarly, stricter discharge requirements to improve surface water quality and ecology may require extended wastewater treatment technology, with higher power consumption and larger carbon footprint. All these developments require innovative technical solutions and changes in behavior. The combination of water and energy gives new oppertunities making use of thermal and chemical energy from wastewater, groundwater and surfacewater. The IWA Water and Energy conference 2010 in Amsterdam is a follow-up of the IWA Water and Energy conference in Copenhagen, Denmark 2009. The 2010 event will have an emphasis on demonstration and implementation, e.g. examples of energy innovations in the water sector. 10 November 2010 - 12 November 2010
